Day Trip to Segovia, Spain

Our epic trip through Spain in 2023 spanned a whopping 17-days. We spent months watching YouTube videos, reading blogs, and scrolling instagram to put together the best trip possible.

Now, I’m giving all my knowledge to you! We started in Barcelona, then went to Seville, Granada, Cordoba, and Madrid (where we day tripped to Toledo and Segovia).

The first city of our trip, Barcelona, is detailed in its own blog. Be sure to start there! Here’s the quick overview before we dive in to Segovia.

Arriving in Segovia

Getting into the city center of Segovia is a little confusing. The train station is way out (like, a couple miles) in the country. It’s all alone in the fields! My guess is they did that to help preserve the historic nature of Segovia, which I appreciate. It also means you have to take a bus from the train station to the city center and it can be a bit confusing to figure out which one to take.

Just ask around and say you’re trying to get to the aqueduct. You’ll be ok! The train station is filled with tourists all trying to do the same thing as you, so just follow the crowd.

When you arrive in the city, the first thing you see is a huge ancient Roman aqueduct from the 1st or 2nd century AD. It’s a super impressive way to start you day! You can climb up the side a bit to get a more elevated view of the city’s plaza.

Walking the Streets

Segovia is not a huge city and can be easily navigated on foot in a few hours. We wandered back and forth through the city streets in awe, admiring the old buildings and cobblestone streets. It’s one of those places you have to constantly remind yourself – This is a real city, I’m in a real city, not Disneyland.

To escape the heat yet again, we took a break inside the Cathedral de Segovia.

Alcazar of Segovia

The castle in Segovia was such a great, worthwhile visit. At this point, all the castles and cathedrals were really blending together (other than Sagrada Familia) and I was feeling a bit like – you’ve seen one you’ve seen them all.

But the Alcazar of Segovia truly looks like a Disney princess castle and I thought that was so cool! It’s a smaller castle and doesn’t take a ton of time to walk through (probably an hour to an hour and a half if you climb the tower). The views from all directions are amazing. You can look back on the city and look out into the countryside.

A Segovian Delicacy

We stopped for a nice meal before making our way back to the train station. I ordered the suckling pig. I’m not going to lie – I read “suckling pig” and thought “succulent pig”. I’m not a vegetarian, but suckling pig (baby pigs usually 2-6 weeks old) was a bit much for me once I realized. ALSO, it was completely delicious. SO delicious.

Back to Madrid for the Night

We then took the bus back to the train station, and took the train back to Madrid for the evening!
