Day Trip to Toledo, Spain

Our epic trip through Spain in 2023 spanned a whopping 17-days. We spent months watching YouTube videos, reading blogs, and scrolling instagram to put together the best trip possible.

Now, I’m giving all my knowledge to you! We started in Barcelona, then went to Seville, Granada, Cordoba, and Madrid (where we day tripped to Toledo and Segovia).

The first city of our trip, Barcelona, is detailed in its own blog. Be sure to start there! Here’s the quick overview before we dive in to Toledo.

Arriving in Toledo

Toledo is a medieval, fortified city on a hill, surrounded by a river. The train station is a short walk from the city center. The walk is really nice because it allows you to see the city from the outside, and then cross the bridges to enter the protected city center. Don’t worry, modern amenities have been added to Toledo, including escalators, which I thought was funny! (but also very wonderful)

The train station itself is also really beautiful.

The #1 Tour

Guys, hear me out. The best tour you’ll take in Toledo is the epic pink train ride from TrainVision. I’m not even joking. Get your tickets from a little ticket booth in the city center square (it looks like one of those booths in NYC where you’d by double decker bus tours, it’s that touristy).

The mini carnival-like train will provide headphones where you can listen to the pre-recorded audio talking about the city as the train makes its way outside the city walls and up to the view point. It’s the BEST viewpoint of the city and is 100% worth it. Do no skip this tour!

The whole tour is about 45-minutes long and drops you back off where you started.

Walking the City

The entire city of Toledo is a UNESCO World Heritage Site because of it’s extensive monumental and cultural heritage. Two things to keep your eyes open for as you wander around – Toledo Marzipan and swords. Yes, very different souvenirs for sure, but both very important to Toledo! We opted for Marzipan and bought a box to take home with us, instead of a sword.

This was another city we had to keep reminding ourselves – this is a real city, not Disneyland. It’s just so magical. Small, narrow streets to explore, little shops and cafes to linger in, open air restaurants to dine at… I just can’t say enough good things about Toledo.

Our favorite spot to eat in Toledo is Bar Ludena. It’s a casual bar with some tables that serves the most delicious Carcamusas. Carcamusas is a pork stew, served with potatoes and bread. So delicious! We also had some tasty flan.

Enter through a heavy curtain, order at the bar, and just chill while snacking on pork stew and drinking a beer. Also, their bathrooms are 10/10. It’s the little things, you know?

Back to Madrid for the Night

After about half a day of exploring, we walked back to the train station and took the train back to Madrid for the evening!
